Strong stuff from former Canadian diplomat and UN envoy Stephen Lewis of AIDS-Free World at the V-Day event in New Orleans yesterday. Lewis believes the United Nations could do far more to combat sexual violence in eastern Congo and elsewhere. (See my stories from the DRC which aired in January.) I plan more reporting on this topic, including testing Lewis’s argument a bit: what do UN officials and member states say in response to his harsh critique? What exactly is the record of the United Nations in tackling gender-based violence? What’s the policy? Where has the money and political capital been spent and why and with what outcome? Is the rhetoric matched by action? Stephen Lewis says no. His full remarks are here.
